You know when you’re ready for your Instagram close up and you or someone you know has that awkward smile? We can try for years to practice that gorgeous photogenic smile and think it’s much easier said than done. But, I found are there are some pretty simple ways to look better in photos! I’ll be sharing 5 tips to fake that perfect smile, some even like our favorite Instagram Stars or celebrities! Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
1. The Close-Your-Eyes-and-Open Trick
You know when you’re trying to get that great shot but the sun is in your eyes? Or how about when your eyes are half closed? Here’s a quick tip! Close your eyes a couple of seconds before you know the picture will be taken, and then slowly open them (not super slow, but don’t jerk them open either), and slowly draw up the corners of your mouth to smile. This resets any of the awkwardness you may feel about taking a photo and makes sure that your smile doesn’t seem forced or overeager! I had to practice a couple of times before getting it down but it makes a huge difference.
2. The Clamp-and-Smirk Trick
This may sound funny when you think about it. Clamp your teeth before you know the photo will be taken. By clamping your teeth, you’re defining your jawline a bit more. Now, smirk slightly for that cool, mysterious look we all try to achieve. Our senior editor, Bobby Schuessler, doesn’t take a photo without first clamping his teeth to define the jawline a bit more and smirking slightly for that cool/mysterious look. If you really want to take it to the next level, try squinching, too.
3. The Side-Smirk Trick
You know the famous celebrities like Ashley Olsen who never really show their teeth? All you need is just that! That slight smile, no teeth and doe-eyed look. Try pursing your lips slightly and opening your eyes for a unique smile.
4. The Smile-With-Eyes Trick
Have you ever heard of smiling with your eyes? I never really understood how to do it myself. But here’s the trick to looking like one of those gorgeous models you see in magazines. Think of something funny. Relax your face, tilt your chin and squint ever so lightly using your eyes. The pose gives you a relaxed, calm and effortless look when looking back at your photos.
5. The Tongue-Touch Trick
A friend of mine was asked how she always looks so fabulous in all her photos. She told me that she places her tongue on the roof of her mouth and smiling without your teeth. This helps to tighten the muscles in your face and neck. It gives you a “natural” looking smile, allows you to sit up straight and makes you think of how you could readjust your posture for your photo shoot.
