They grow so much in a year. I’ve been throwing backyard birthday parties for Summer for years now. Think this will be the 5th party I’ve shared on HOLB and each year I love her theme more and more. We pulled this one together in less than 2 weeks and love how everything came out. Sharing the 411 on Summer’s mythological birthday party details in today’s post.

Summer was torn between fairies, dragons and unicorns this year so we pulled it all together and made it into one very magical theme! Between us the whole fairy theme has been a dream party of mine probably since she was born! Once she said the word fairy I was like “YES YES!” Then she wanted dragons and this mama was having a hard time coming up with a girly dragon theme so combining it made it much easier and to be honest — it was just magical and whimsical!
TABLE SETTING
When planning her parties I always start off with the table setting. Last year her theme was a Luau (you can read about that party here). I had gotten the wood palettes to put in the lawn last year and stored them so we could continue using them. Saves on renting tables and chairs plus I think it’s just so cute seeing the kids sprawled out in the lawn. So much more fun for them!
I used a mix of solid white and lace table clothes to cover the palettes. My Mom took pillows from last year and bought party themed fabric to recover the pillows to match and then I laid a mix of white sheets and small rugs around the palettes for the kids to sit on.
The table setting was by far my favorite. Moss and wood details are a must for a mythological birthday party. I used a moss table runner and got little pieces of wood chips to sprinkle throughout the center. Summer painted some miniature houses that we mixed with little fairy ornaments. And you might recognize the birdcages from her Communion party that I hosted in your backyard back in April. Details here.
BUT what really made the table come together was the flower arch. What a difference that made and honestly it was not difficult to do. We used a balloon arch and added artificial flowers (eucalyptus and wisteria) and tied them around the arch using wire.
CANDY & FAVOR TABLE
Every year I come up with creating a candy table as the favors for the party. Kids love candy and the parents can enjoy too. If there is one thing I’ve learned from having these parties over the years is you don’t need a ton of treats. I’ve overdone it so many times. You just need a few key treats in cute wrapping and some grab and bag candy.
The backdrop was actually pretty easy. I used curtain string lights that we hung behind and I mixed in tulle and some butterfly and flower clips from the $1 store. It looked so pretty at night all lit up as the kids filled their candy bags.
The main attraction this year were the mushroom cupcakes. Perfect easy treat to make for a mythological birthday party. Vanilla cupcakes, red icing and white chocolate chips — so simple! I bought the fairy cupcake stand to display them on and I ordered to go cupcake holders so the kids could package them up to bring home in their treat bags.
We also do rice crispie treats every year. Wrap them in plastic as they look so much cuter and to match the theme we added in dragon cupcake toppers and black and white icing and sprinkles.
Finally we had chocolate covered pretzel rods, gumballs, pixie sticks for fairy dust, unicorn poop which are marshmallows, Pocky to look like twigs and some fairy gummies.
Last favor I had were these little fairy flower crowns for the girls to wear home. If the kids were younger I would’ve added fairy wings but being we have 9 year olds I just went with headbands. Also I’m linking the mushroom lanterns here. They look so cute around the yard!
Another must have detail for any mythological birthday party are fairy lights! I bought a 12 pack of individual battery operated twinkle lights and filled a dozen mason jars. They were placed on the kids table and all the other tables throughout the yard. I wish I took pics at night because everything had such a pretty glow!
Think this about sums up our mythological birthday party. It was just as magical as we had hoped for. I know one day Summer will tell me she no longer wants a party but until she puts the brakes on my party planning I will continue to make all her party wishes come true. I hope one day she will look back on these parties and smile at the memories, the fun and the details. And as always thank you to my Mom and Erik. These parties aren’t possible without their help. Think we got a good system in place now! Till next year!
